The images below were shot on the Contax RTS (roll 38).

I will speak more about my experience down below…

KODAK PORTRA 160

Me and my friend Oscar decided to travel to Germany together. Getting there was a pain. I had to purchase bus tickets that would take us from Exeter to Bristol but the bus broke down. It didn’t even leave Exeter. I had to call my mum. Thankfully she gave us both a lift. We flew from Bristol to Prague and then Oscar’s brother would meet us outside of the airport. He lives in Germany so he was nice and gave us a lift. We were staying in Amberg for a few days. It was nice weather and I knew this before the trip so I had bought way too much film with me. About 8 rolls of film. I didn’t get round to shooting all of it but still, it’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I started off the holiday with a roll of Portra 160. We never left Amberg and so the images above are shot entirely within Amberg.
I don’t shoot Portra much really. This is only my sixth roll of Portra and only my third roll of 160. To be completely honest, I don’t see what the big deal is with Portra. This is going to make a lot of people mad but I feel that it is overly expensive for what you get out of it but hey, maybe it’s just me? I will need to practice more and experiment more with Portra in the coming years. Most of my images came out in a way that I’m not too fond of. I am a bit disappointed with these images.
I will say that this roll was short dated and so it was nearing its expiry date when I shot this, and It got pumped full of radiation from the airport X-Rays but I doubt that really did anything to the quality of the exposures. The images I have included here are okay but I just didn’t really feel anything when I scanned them and I didn’t feel anything when I edited them and to be honest, I don’t really feel anything when looking at them now. I think in the future I will stick to the film stocks that I know, however this does not mean to say that I am giving up on Portra, no. Not at all. I will be shooting this again, but for now I need to not shoot much Portra and save up my money. $25 on one roll of Portra is a lot and it could better be spent elsewhere.
